Why “Open Source” misses the point of Free Software
However, the obvious meaning for the expression “open source software” is “You can look at the source code,” and most people seem to think that's what it means. That is a much weaker criterion than free software, and much weaker than the official definition of open source. It includes many programs that are neither free nor open source.

4. Be wary of clever code!
Cleverness for cleverness sake is not our friend; if something is only slightly more handy but infinitely more complex, then please reconsider your implementation.
KISS for sure on our project. Make it work and work in a comprehensible way. If the FreeEMS code base is simple to read and understand and works cleanly it will encourage contributions at a later date.
5. Column width
80 column line width except in exceptional situations
This on the other hand I *used* to adhere to, but not in 2008 on a desktop machine. This still has it's uses on a server when you have to work through an ssh tunnel to a box a few blocks away and make changes using VI, but here with a 17" or greater screen there is just no need anymore.

This is akin to a phenonmenon dubbed the PeterPrinciple of Programming by authors on the Wiki-Wiki web [Cunninghan 1999a]. Complexity increases rapidly until the it reaches a level of complexity just beyond that with which programmers can comfortably cope. At this point, complexity and our abilities to contain it reach an uneasy equilibrium. The blitzkrieg bogs down into a siege. We built the most complicated system that can possible work [Cunningham 1999b].

Such code can become a personal fiefdom, since the author care barely understand it anymore, and no one else can come close.

One of the user in my JAW forum posted the following WRT to how to get a clock LED ":" to look like a decimal

"For the colon problem just use a sharpie [marker]"

This is also a good one

(Please do point out these mistakes, I'll always be the one pointing them out when you make them, and I hate the fact that spending time on the internet is dulling my language skills...)

One of NZs former prime ministers :
When questioned about increased levels of emigration from New Zealand to Australia, Muldoon responded that these migrants "raised the average IQ of both countries".

Tesco's, Asda and all those cheapie supermarkets seem to be the place where the people who drive health and crime statistics up go and shop.
:lol2: Although I cracked up when I read this, it is painfully true and I outright refuse to go to Tesco's now.

The rest of the sheepole in this country seem to be emasculated men who are guided around retail parks by their mentally incapacitated female partners looking at rubbish they dont need, then gleefully buying said rubbish on credit.
LOL, again, very funny. I can't testify to the truth of this because I've spent most of my time hiding in the cottage in front of the PC wearing out keyboards etc to avoid the Chavs and other low lives in Banbury :-)

Nothing worse than sheep! I know a guy with an asian girl friend that follows him around... I'd rather mine was dragging me by my nuts than following me around brain dead!
