Magical Mystery Mission, AKA "The Mission".

As mysterious as I'm trying to make it sound, this mission is probably not. It shall not be spoken of by definite terms. It shall only be spoken of by necessary supplies and equipment. A mission of moderate size and with only a modest team, this mission shall be great fun, or a great disaster. Only time will tell. The members of the team may or may not be obvious, and may or may not post here in this thread. They may choose to use proxies as a distraction technique, or to post themselves to give the impression of not going after having seen this preamble. The destination and origin of the mission could be equal, far, close or vice versa, no one really knows for sure. When the mission shall take place is also uncertain, at least to you, soon, though, very soon. I'm sure, though, that you could guess one of the team members based on the author of this thread. May the mission planning begin!

Strategy, two team members on the plane, two checked in bags, two carry on bags.
  • All irreplaceable and non security risk items to be in carry on baggage.
  • All security risk items that are irreplaceable or in any way valuable or necessary shall be distributed among the two checked in bags equally in order to create redundancy.
Things that we need to take:
  • READY Tie down straps, 25mm, strong, 4 of, 2 in each checked bag.
  • READY Jaguar ECUs, 2 of, 1 in each checked bag.
  • READY A modified pulley with a missing tooth pattern attached or cut into it, lucky dip, one only, one checked bag
  • READY A suitable sensor for reading that missing toothed wheel, same bag as above
  • READY As much closed cell packaging foam as can be fit in the bags with the other contents, both bags, maxed out.
  • READY Four Riedel red wine glasses, two in each bag, redundant and perhaps insufficient in the case of one loss.
  • READY Two Debian laptops, one in each carry on bag.
  • READY One gopro style camera in one carry on bag.
  • READY One DSLR style camera around one good man's neck.
  • READY Spare underwear in case things get exceedingly scary.
  • PARTLY Two sleeping bags and one or two self inflating mattress, distributed into both bags as equally as possible.
  • A decent sized wad of cash, held tight to one team members chest and not let out of his/her sight.
  • PARTLY A four-post wasted spark coil in working order, and some matching leads of sufficient length, stored in one suitcase with maximum luck.
  • PARTLY Minimal tool kit for on-road repairs in the middle of no where
  • PARTLY Blankets/sheets to protect interior from luggage and parts
  • PARTLY Some vacuum hose to attach between manifold and MAP sensor
  • Yeah, yeah, nah. Electric carby fuel pump just in case
  • NOPE :-( Plug for coils and ignitors to drive them
Things required at the destination, either in advance, or during the mission, as appropriate:
  • READY A bunch of thick cardboard for packaging heavy dangerous infamous items.
  • READY One bottle of long-cellared wine for shared consumption.
  • AVAILABLE One bottle of freshly-purchased wine for shared consumption.
  • READY One heavy dangerous infamous item.
  • READY Two boxes of associated items that assist in making the heavy dangerous infamous item properly dangerous and infamous once in action.
  • READY One 6.6kg circular device from a famous model of automotive weaponry, skinned with something near worthless that doesn't last long when abused in a stationary fashion.
  • READY One or two good soldering irons, and some solder, and insulation tape, etc.
  • READY Some moderate hookup wire to solder to various unnamed items with enthusiasm never before seen.
  • READY A functional and usable timing light.
  • DUBIOUS Patience and tolerant neighbours.
Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to make suggestions of things to take in the checked and/or carry on bags. Those items could be genuinely useful, or purely comical. That is up to you. Your mission starts now. The team's mission starts later.

Go to it!

Fred.

PS, those with any prior knowledge of the mission are expressly forbidden to discuss the nature of the mission or their knowledge of it, however are welcome to participate in the mission described a few lines above.

I'll be taking these with me tomorrow to visit a kiwi drifter and obtain a pulley to attach it to or mimic it on: https://twitter.com/FredCookeNZ/status/ ... 3739076609

Updated lists with preparations thus far, too.

Trying to find some hard to measure measurement accurately, don't ever try to tell me that I'm not thorough...

D1 = 7.00mm
D2 = 7.85mm
OD D1 = 66.00mm
OD D2 = 66.00mm
ID D1 = 50.05mm
ID D2 = 50.00mm
Centres D1 1 = 50.05 + ((66 - 50.05) / 2) = 50.05 + 15.95/2 = 50.05 + 7.975 = 58.025
Centres D1 2 = 50.05 + 7.85 = 57.90
Centres D1 3 = 66 - 7.85 = 58.15
Centres D2 1 = 50 + ((66 - 50) / 2) = 50 + 16/2 = 50 + 8 = 58
Centres D2 2 = 50 + 7.85 = 57.85
Centres D2 3 = 66 - 7.85 = 58.15

D2 Mean 58.000
D1 Mean 58.025

I'm guessing it might be 58.000mm... :-p

35.00 hole...
60-62 flat depending how generous you are...

Outer edge of existing holes is 58mm inner edge is 50mm hole diameter must be 4mm

Using M8 fasteners means the existing holes will form the inner edge of where we bolt up.

17.75, which we'll call 18.00 mm dia for the other piece means the thing must be centered 9mm+ above the outer face.

3.62 - 2.12 = 1.5mm puts the 2mm piece sitting on top of the outer face. If we pretend that it's 1mm lower than it is, then the spacers to make this work right need to be 1.5 + 9 = 10.5mm long, where 9.5mm would be tight/touching, 10mm would work, and 2mm clearance might be necessary depending on condition of the real macoy. So maximum 12mm spacers for a snug fit, with 11.5mm spacers giving 2mm clearance, and more giving more clearance, but drawing ever nearer to other stuff.

Ideal fastener length, with locktight, is 12 + 9 + 2 + any washers, and no lead in/pointy bit. IE, 23-25mm of thread. Got 8, 4 for each bag. ;-) And nuts for spacers, not idea., but not too bad either and allows some adjustability with care. Will look around for more washers and spacers starting nowish.

More news as it comes to hand. Mission possible? Time will tell.

Hmmm, doing some larger scale measuring wondering if I can work some magic and make something fit where it really shouldn't...

3800x1500 sqrt((3800*3800)+(1500*1500)) = 4085
4.5 x 1.7 - not cool, don't want to move those things.
3.2 + 0.6 = 3.8 - pain in the arse and although it would *just* fit, would not be able to be gotten into that position in the first place.
diagonal might work, but also be a pain in the arse, however I may be willing to give it a try short term. Needs a diagram.

Another thread needs an update though...

Both checked bags are fully packed and zipped up ready for the airport! All things maximally distributed between them. Carry on bags are prepped and not quite ready for lift off. To be finalised tomorrow arvo/evening just prior to departure TO the airport! Lots could still go wrong. Hopefully nothing does and the whole thing is smooth sailing and happy camping. Dun nun nun! :-D

Got this completely wrong. Ideal turned out to be 17 or so mm. Re reading it, still not sure what I was thinking, what any of it meant, and how I got it so wrong, but I did. :-/

How does this affect The Mission? Solution in place?
DUBIOUS Patience and tolerant neighbours.
Please tell us you have some good stories here.

Half wrong! Was rushing around like a mad chook last night. Have ignitors (2 in each suitcase, perfect redundancy), do not have plug, can cut or go and pull one from a pickapart car.

Pics and stories should flood in starting tomorrow morning :-D
