Tear Drop Trailer Designs

Post by Fred »

Since I first saw a picture of one some months ago, I've been pondering the idea of creating a cheap light teardrop trailer for sleeping in.

A mate is building one right now in a quite traditional, but somewhat custom way. It's looking good so far! Looking forward to seeing it in one piece and on the road.

I just ordered the book with a few hundred photos in it, which should make for good reading in a casual kind of way.

Some of them I love, some I hate. Such is life. I plan to collect "love" ones here.

So, without further ado, some pics that I love.

<edit, wrote this weeks ago, hitting submit now, without the pics>

PS, book arrived and is neat :-)

Ideas that differ from most others:

Construction to be light as possible using sandwich style. Foam core, ply outer, edges in wood with grain appropriate direction for good strength. Epoxy glue to be used for laminations and joints. Possible alloy frame.

Floor is traditionally 17+mm ply, I'd scrap this idea and use a lighter grade on top with foam and perhaps plastic outer on bottom for water resistance. The thinner ply alone would not be stiff enough, but laminated to foam and something below that, it would be. It ONLY holds a mattress anyway, so load is very distributed.

Classic shape but longer than floor such that when you lift the back lid, you can stand inside/within the line of the sides. What this means is classic shape with convenient bench usage, otherwise you stand too far away from it.

Door(s) to be BIG (most of the side, double or large round or something) and wheels to be far back. this means you wouldn't so much climb into it and exist, rather you could hang out in there, viewing the ocean or whatever with the door(s) open.

Interior finish? Unsure. either urethaned veneer ply or peach painted.

Dimensions to suit a pre purchased mattress of appropriate size for me.

Here's an old pic of my friend's one, the one that got me excited about the idea:

Just for the record. See above-linked thread for my replacement idea :-)
