Are you using the github "pull request" inteface for code review?

The point of the numbers is really for adjustment, and seeing the difference between a cell and it's surrounding cells right? The background makes spotting outlier cells easy, but fine adjustment probably still needs numbers to be shown. So why not show a number when a cell has focus (or mouseover) ...
